Microsoft Launch Video-On-Demand Ahead of AOL Time Warner and Hollywood Studios

Microsoft and an entertainment broadband company launched their video-on-demand service on 17th October 2001. Culver City, a Californian-based "Intertainer" are offering 70,000 hours of content including films and TV programs through a subscription service on their website. (see press release)

Government plan for DTV released

The Government has published the draft Digital TV Action Plan, which outlines the next steps to ensure the UK remains a world leader in the Digital TV revolution. It includes a boost to DTV signals, extended coverage, pre-Christmas publicity and the appointment of a DTV Team leader (see press release)

BBC and Kingston Communications launch iTV in Hull

BBC and Kingston Communications joined forces to bring Interactive TV to Hull, through two parallel Learning initiatives they will offer multi-media content and develop further packages in line with Education Action Zone targets, that are to be delivered into schools at all levels and direct to homes through Kingston Communications’ broadband network. 47% of Viewers are Won Over by Digital TV

BskyB independently commission research shows that 47% of viewers with a “low intension” of subscribing to Digital TV changed their minds after seeing demonstrations from Sky Digital, NTL, Telewest and Ondigital. (see press release)

H Design and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) have collaborated to interactively enhance their new genre of programming Life 360. They have developed innovative techniques through interactive television that enables more than 15 unique enhanced television experiences and can connect viewers in their local communities to events, organizations, and resources that relate topically to the episode of the week.
