WorldGate to Launch U.S. Interactive TV Study
US-based WorldGate Communications is about to conduct a multi-market study into the effects and effectiveness of of Channel HyperLinkingSM. Channel HyperLinking is a proprietary WorldGate technology that lets the viewer go instantly (5 seconds or less) to Web sites that relate to the content they are watching. All it takes is one touch of a button on the cable remote or a wireless keyboard supplied by the cable operator. With the WorldGate service, both the television and the Internet are on at the same time. (Article in Adweek online)
Earlier this month UK digital terrestrial TV operator ONdigital announced that they would be launching ONnet an Internet service via TV with x-links - direct links from a programme or advertisement to related website. (Full press release)
Hyperlinking from a TV programme to a web site which contains additional information which could be in the form of text, voice, video offers some interesting potential for turning passive viewers into active learners. The technology is only just becoming available with "x-links" and "channel hyperlinking". But the next stage is to conduct some research into its potential usage for learning. pjb Associates is interested in any organisation who would like to become a partner in such a research activity.
