This EC independent study found cable modem's and ADSL will rapidly become the leading technologies used to access the Internet at high-speed. The study also emphasises that there will be considerable differences in the pace of broadband take-up between Member States. (Source: Europa) (see report)

Consumers not convinced by iTV

Nearly three-quarters of consumers still need to be convinced that interactive television (ITV) will enhance their lifestyle. In fact, among homes with ITV capabilities, respondents said they rarely or never use interactive links in TV shows and TV-based Internet and email.  However, the popularity of two ITV applications, video on demand (VOD) and interactive program guides (IPG), suggests that the right product may indeed win acceptance. The education channel will make full use of the potential of the digital format to deliver learning tools with an interactive element. It will also offer the possibility of accessing textual information during a broadcast. (see article)

Video on demand (VOD) will soon become reality as the lure of a vast new marketplace leads an increasing number of players to take the plunge, say analysts at Frost & Sullivan. (see article)

Video-on-demand is coming to Europe

The European market for broadband video on demand is estimated to have 8.5 million subscribers and be worth €2.7bn by 2006. By 2002 Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese consumers are expected to have access to video-on-demand with Germany, Scandinavia, France and Belgium due to have access in the next few years. (see article)

The Korean Broadband Success Story

According to a new market research report, South Korea is the world's leader in broadband Internet services with over 6.25 million subscribers. Nearly 50% of online Korean households are connected to the broadband Internet services. Besides xDSL and cable access, Korean end- users are offered various alternative access modes, including LMDS, satellite and wireless LAN services, which are gaining popularity in selected and remote areas. Go Digital" TV pilot project

The UK Independent Television Commission has announced that an area encompassing Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield and Tamworth will provide the location for the first "Go Digital" TV pilot project. The pilot project will help experts to build a better understanding of the technical and social issues which viewers face in switching from analogue to digital TV services. (more details)

MPEG-4 adds interactivity to video

MPEG-4 is a wide-ranging set of audio and video technologies designed in part to condense large digital packages into small files that can be easily transmitted online, much like today's most common media formats, such as MP3, RealVideo and Windows Media. According to a recent article proponents say, the important features are the interactivity that MPEG-4 offers. For example, video functions almost like a Web page, allowing people to interact with the picture on the screen or to manipulate individual elements in real time. (see article)

Half of UK will have DTV by Dec 2005

Research shows that presently over seven million households have Digital TV (DTV), but by the end of 2005, that figure will have increased to one half of all UK households. DTV offers the opportunity to personally tailor TV viewing and buy various items using the iTV internet.  (see press release)

Third of UK homes have digital TV

According to a recent article in The Times a third of the 24 million UK households have digital TV (see article)
