NTL breaks down the barriers to broadband
On Monday, 2nd July, NTL residential customers in the North West will become the first in the world to be able to receive high-speed broadband internet services by simply connecting their digital cable set-top box, which features an embedded cable modem, to their personal computer wherever it is in the home. No additional hardware is required.
Over 500,000 UK homes already have an NTL digital cable set-top box with the embedded cable modem in it and interest in buying broadband services is high. Over 8000 customers in Manchester have pre-registered for the service even ahead of the local marketing campaign that launches next week.
This broadband access service allows NTL digital customers to enjoy download speeds of up to 512kbps (compared with 56kbps for a normal dial-up modem) to deliver richer web-based content, faster. (see press release)25 June 2001
Cable modems will be used by 57.5 million subscribers worldwide by 2005
According to a recent study by IDC a large market research firm, expects the cable modem industry to continue its fast growth. Cable modems, the leading high-speed Internet access option ahead of DSL (digital subscriber lines), grew about 178 percent to 7.2 million customers in 2000. Cable modem equipment revenue grew 122 percent last year. (see article)
VOD Emerging as Killer Set-top App
According to a recent study by Yankee Group video on demand services beset by low set-top box penetration and high costs, is set to emerge this year as a killer application for interactive television. (see article)
