(UK) BT plan WLAN Hot Spot service

Interestingly, according an article in The Register, UK based telco BT plan to launch a WLAN hot spot service likely to be called BTOpenzone for for less than £95 (140 Euro approx) or $145 per month plus VAT!! (see article)

(UK) Dramatic Growth Predicted for Wireless LAN 'Last Mile' Access, and Public Hotspots

However according to UK based Juniper Research Worldwide service revenues for Public Wireless LANs will be worth $9.5bn in five years time, with 'last mile' WLAN revenues reaching almost $5.5bn. According to Tony Crabtree, Principal Analyst, says "The ability of 802.11, and other WLAN technologies, to provide 'last mile', and public hotspot access, has catapulted the technology to the forefront of both the broadband and mobile internet sectors."(see press release)

(Japan) Japanese Mobile Telecom provider launches Wireless LAN Services

Mobile telecom provider, NTT DoCoMo are launching their "Mzone" new LAN services from July 1, 2002. After trials, DoCoMo decided that Mzone is commercially viable and will initially be implemented in nine locations throughout Tokyo and its vicinity. DoCoMo plans to continually expand the Mzone wireless LAN service area. The service will cost 2,000 yen (EUR 16.9) per month. (Source: NTT DoCoMo) (see press release)

(UK) mmO2 introduce trial prices for 3G

mmO2 has set four trial tariffs for its 3G service on the Isle of Man, aimed at corporations, small and medium-sized companies, consumers and heavy users of the internet. There is a monthly subscription and free data allowance. Customers exceeding the allowance are informed and an additional charge will be applied. (Source: mmo2) (see press release)

(Singapore) Video streaming demonstration for the new Nokia 9210i

At the Nokia Connection 2002 show in Singapore, Nokia used Orca’s iTV application software to demonstrate streamed video services to the Nokia 9210i Communicator. This means that users will be able to view a series of movie trailers and choose the movie they would like to order via their video-on-demand service. (Source: Nokia) (see press release)

(USA) New York State School Associations to Buy an Estimated 5,000 Palm Handhelds

An estimated 5,000 Palm handhelds are to be brought for a three-year grant program, NYTALKS, designed by the New York State School Associations. The program has been developed to help education leaders to explore the technology as a catalyst for organizational growth and student achievement. James Torrance, vice president of the Magellan Foundation said "Our goal with NYTALKS is to demonstrate to school leaders the different ways in which they can use technology as a learning and leadership tool."
