Each event or conference looks at the next new, bigger and better technology platform, with IBC or NAB being marked by a focus on one core theme. Internet TV revenue to grow nearly 14-fold by 2011

The market for Internet TV services will rise to $5.79 billion in 2011, expanding by a factor of 13.7 from $422.7 million in 2006, technology research company iSuppli Corp predicts in its report, Internet TV: Revenue and Network Demands for Online News, Sports and Entertainment Video. 61% of Americans “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that they wanted the ability to connect the internet to their TV, according to research from iSuppli. Male respondents were even more favourable with a 71% “agreed” or “strongly agreed” response. While the early market for Internet TV delivered to PCs has created growth and excitement, the real disruptive opportunity is yet to come. As more consumer electronic devices like TVs, DVD players, game consoles, iPods and portable gadgets become web-connected, Internet TV will leap from computer screens into the consumer’s primary media environment: the living room TV. 26 June 2007

80% of 18-24 yr old US Males Watch Online Video Weekly

Some 80% of 18 to 24 year-old male Internet users in the U.S. watch online videos at least once a week, and 35% on a daily basis, according to a national online Magid Media Futures survey conducted the last week of March. Overall, among 12 to 64 year-old Internet users, daily usage of online video rose by 56% over the last year. This year, 14% reported using online video every day--up from 9% in 2006. Weekly usage also rose 18% over last year, with 52% of the Internet users viewing online video once a week or more, compared with 44% in 2006 19 June 2007

Internet video is expected to generate $5.8 billion by 2011

Internet video is expected to generate $5.8 billion by 2011, with ad-supported streaming to PCs and TVs accounting for $1.7 billion, while consumer spending on movie and TV downloads will top $4.1 billion -- up from $111 million last year -- according to a new report from Adams Media Research (AMR). The firm sees a period of experimentation between 2007 and 2009, during which the ad-supported model will dominate. But as more consumers connect their PCs to their TVs, spending on downloads will expand rapidly and exceed ad spending by 2011. 21 February 2007

Tiscali UK targets 5 million IPTV homes

Tiscali UK has unveiled plans to extend the availability of its IPTV service to five million homes by the end of this year. The Italian broadband provider is using last September’s acquisition of Homechoice to act as a springboard into the UK’s major cities. 5 February 2007

YouTube viewers watch less television as a result

Four in ten adults in the United States have watched a video on YouTube. Of those that visit the video clip web site frequently, one in three said they are watching less television as a result. Three quarters of them said they would visit the site less often if adverts were shown before each video. 4 February 2007

Broadband TV is changing dynamics of the Ad Business

Nielsen Analytics have released a new report “Whatever, Whenever, Wherever: How Broadband is Redefining the Economics of Television”, revealing that advertisers and television programmers are finding new and more lucrative advertising opportunities with broadband video. The study also determined that the use of broadband video actually extends the reach of traditional TV, and that broadband consumers are young, affluent, highly educated, and tend to have high speed web access virtually 24/7, making it an integral part of their lifestyle. 24 January 2007

BBC plans to provide broadband audio and video services

BBC plans to provide broadband audio and video services with its iplayer have received a cautious recommendation from the communications regulator following a market impact assessment. Ofcom anticipates that linear television viewing may fall by up to 30% over the next five years as a result of video-on-demand and similar services. 23 January 2007

RealNetworks to offer free streaming of independent full-length movies

RealNetworks has announced that its new film and entertainment information site, Film.com is introducing the Film.com Movie of the Week, which includes free streaming access to full-length movies along with information, interviews, and background on the movie and its creators. Film.com will showcase established and up-and-coming filmmakers and their films throughout 2007. 21 January 2007

Venice Project faces challenge from Scaglia's Babelgum

The Venice Project, the peer-to-peer broadband video platform devised by the founders of voice network Skype, has a deep-pocketed rival. Italian telecommunications mogul Silvio Scaglia is backing Babelgum, which like Venice, aims to combine the internet's interactivity and global reach with TV's lean-back experience. 16 January 2007

Brightcove closes USD 59.5 mln funding round

US-based internet TV firm Brightcove has closed a USD 59.5 million strategic funding round which will allow the company to accelerate international expansion. The funds will also solidify the company's position as the internet TV market matures and consolidates in the coming year. The round was led by AllianceBernstein, Brookside Capital and Maverick Capital, and included funds from The New York Times and Transcosmos Investments & Business Development. 17 January 2007

Netflix to offer ‘instant’ online video

Netflix the world's largest online movie rental service, has introduced a new feature that allows people to immediately watch movies and television series on their personal computers and said it will make the new feature available to its subscribers in a phased roll-out over the next six months. Subscribers will continue to receive DVDs by mail from the company's market-leading catalogue of over 70,000 titles and will have the additional option of instantly watching about 1,000 movies and TV series on their PCs. The new feature will be included in subscribers' monthly membership plans at no additional cost. 16 January 2007

Apple TV launched

Apple TV is the product name for Apple's 'iTV' initiative, first announced in September. Costing $299 in US or £199 in UK and available from February 2007. The Apple TV set-top box connects to a widescreen TV and allows consumers to watch programmes and movies downloaded via iTunes and stored on a PC or Mac on the TV screen. 10 January 2007

Microsoft unveils Xbox 360 IPTV set-top box

Bill Gates reaffirmed that convergence is at the heart of Microsoft's strategy in a keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas where the software giant demonstrated a range of convergent media devices including a Microsoft Xbox 360 games console that doubles up as an internet protocol television (IPTV) set-top box. 8 January 2007

Broadband-Enabled Televisions to Reach 162 Million by 2011

According to "Broadband Video: Redefining the Television Experience", The Diffusion Group's latest report on IP media, the number of broadband-enabled TVs - those capable of directly or indirectly receiving broadband video content - is expected to exceed 162 million households globally by 2011. 6 January 2007

Sling extends internet video to the television set

Sling Media, the company that pioneered the concept of place-shifting television from the home for remote viewing over a broadband connection, is planning to provide a companion product to bring internet video to the television. 6 January 2007

Tiscali says viewers would rather watch video-on-demand

Two thirds of viewers are interested in watching on-demand programming on their television over a broadband service. A quarter expects mainstream broadcasters to struggle against a wave of smaller niche programming providers. Herb Scannell, a former vice chairman of MTV Networks and former president of Nickelodeon Networks, unveiled Next New Networks on Thursday. The new company plans to put more than 30 of what it calls "micro-television networks" on the Internet. 4 January 2007

Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, the entrepreneurs who created the pioneering Web applications Kazaa and Skype, are working on a new communications venture, BusinessWeek.com has learned.
