A Finnish company Kanki has just published a product called TalkBack which allows teachers to design voice-interactive exercises for use by telephone. It contains a hardware board for telephone lines and a windows based software package for building the interactive telepone exercises. The teacher inputs dial codes for the correct answers, dial codes for the choices, locations and conditions for the interactive comment. Using the telephone, the teacher also records the actual questions and comments. When the application is ready it will run for 24 hours a day handling all the incoming calls.
Students call at a time of their convenience and answer the questions. During the exercise, students receive automatic comments based on their performance. The TalkBack also allows the use of a student number and saves the results of all students in a data file, available for the teachers further use.
